As spring is springing, what better time for Pentabus Theatre to re-release their audio piece, Folklore and Fitness With Carole Vegan?
The 5-minute short audio piece has been re-released in celebration of the Spring equinox and is in a similar vein to Monty Python, Spike Milligan and What We Do In The Shadows. Written and performed by Tim Foley, it is silly, fun, and somehow sounds like how spring feels: bouncy and energetic.
As well as being in celebration of the Spring equinox, Folklore and Fitness also celebrated Village Halls Week, which ran from 17th – 23rd March, which shone a light on the efforts of volunteers who keep England’s 10,000+ village halls running.
The text from Tim Foley is light and amusing but also is clearly about spring and the optimism, hope and positivity the season brings. The audio piece is cleverly done to have a fun, 5-minute audio all about spring that livens the imagination up and simultaneously encourages people to go outside for some fresh air, and at just 5 minutes long, you can listen to it on your drive to work, your walk to the local shop, or as you run the hoover around.
Writer and performer of Folklore and Fitness, Tim Foley has a long relationship with Pentabus Theatre; he was their Channel 4 Writer-In-Residence in 2016, has led Pentabus Young Writers and National Young Writers, and his play Driftwood was commissioned by the company, toured rural venues in 2024 and is currently on tour again, on a mid-scale tour of the country.
Foley commented about Pentabus Theatre and this audio release: “Pentabus Theatre Company have made me the playwright I am today. They unabashedly supported me and my weird scribblings through thick and thin, and I’m not the only artist to benefit from their nurturing and encouragement. The theatre industry still feels like it’s on fire in places, but I truly believe that it’s companies like this one who will help quell the flames.
I’m delighted Pentabus are celebrating Village Halls Week by remembering the Equine Ox, first sighted on this merry plane of existence four years ago today. Mr C. Vegan would like to inform his audiences that he’s doing very well, he now runs a yoga retreat for cryptids in Wigan.”
Whilst Folklore and Fitness with Carole Vegan is somewhat ridiculous, it is one way to guarantee putting a smile on your face and shows that you can be easily entertained without even having to move or open your eyes; listening is more than enough!
